Cornea:-

The cornea is the outermost layer of the eye, serving as its “window” to the outside world. Not only does the cornea protect the eye from bacteria, foreign objects and debris, it also plays a key role in properly focusing light beams that enter into your eye, so that vision is clear. When the cornea becomes damaged, your sight becomes compromised, possibly leading to permanent vision loss. If you have a condition or injury that affects your cornea, it can be uncomfortable and can negatively affect your vision and quality of life.

Eye doctor use a variety of methods to properly diagnose and treat a range of corneal conditions. If you are experiencing vision problems, schedule an appointment to find out if the cause is a corneal condition or injury. One of our trusted eye doctor can thoroughly examine your eyes and symptoms and recommend proper treatment.

Corneal Conditions We Treat

  • Refractive errors (e.g., nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism)
  • Corneal abrasion (scratched or scraped cornea)
  • Corneal infections and ulcers
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Bandage contact lenses (BCL)
  • Blepharitis
  • Pterygium
  • Keratoconus
  • Dystrophies

Corneal Services We Offer

Cornea problems can only be diagnosed through a comprehensive eye exam performed by a qualified ophthalmologist. If you are diagnosed with a corneal condition, our eye doctors may recommend the following treatment options:

Medication

Mild corneal problems or conditions such as corneal abrasion, pink eye or dry eye may be treated with prescription medication. Depending on your condition, our doctors may prescribe eye drops, ointments or oral medication.

Corrective lenses

Refractive errors caused by irregularly shaped corneas are typically corrected with prescription glasses or contact lenses.

Surgery

  • Laser vision correction surgeries, including FEMTO LASIK (Bladeless Lasik)9 , LASIK and PRK, are used to correct refractive errors (e.g., farsightedness, nearsightedness, astigmatism). These procedures involve reshaping the cornea so that it refracts light onto the retina properly, resulting in clearer vision.
  • In advanced cases of pterygium, surgery may be performed to remove the fleshy tissue growth on the cornea.
  • INTACs surgery may be used to treat advanced stages of keratoconus. The surgery involves implanting a small, plastic, circular ring into the middle layer of the cornea to restore its shape.
  • CORNEAL TRANSPLANT surgery is a procedure that can be used to treat a variety of cornea conditions.
  • When the cornea (front portion of the eye) becomes cloudy or damaged due to injury or disease and when conventional methods of treatment do not work, a corneal transplant becomes necessary to restore vision to an acceptable level. There are several different types of corneal transplants available to the surgeon and based on the condition being treated, they will select the best method for you. Corneal transplants are possible due to donations by recently deceased people. Without the donation eyesight, could not be restored. Nearly everyone can be a donor and Ophthalmologist’s around the world urge people to donate. The types of corneal transplants are listed below.
